As mentioned couldn't cover this one. Lou was on fire, Deng finally showed up, Randle and Clarkson not so much.
Post your thoughts here. |

This was a game that on paper we basically had no business winning: 4th road game in 5 nights, 2nd night of a back to back, two starters out (Russell & Young), key backup out (Nance), and replacement starting PG goes out early in the game with injury (Calderon). Even before the season started, ESPN had analyzed the entire NBA schedule and had this game highlighted as one of the worst disadvantages for any team.
Quote: | 12/3: Lakers (Grizzlies): 8.5
A back-to-back for LA starting in Toronto means a late trip through customs and no rest. Even tougher: This next game is the fourth in five nights-all on the road. |
Despite all the Lakers' disadvantages, it was still disappointing to lose this game. Grizzlies were shorthanded too - with Mike Conley, Zack Randolph, and Vince Carter all out for the game. Marc Gasol played well as expected, but it was the lesser known Grizzlies that killed us - Lakers did a terrible job boxing out JaMychal Green (7 ORB), and Troy Daniels had a bench scoring duel with Lou Will ending with 31 pts (including 6-12 3pt shooting).
While the Lakers were able to build and sustain a small lead for most of the 2nd and 3rd quarters, they fell apart during the stretch. The last lead was 95-94 on a Mosgov and-1 (missed the FT) with 5:22 to go, and not many good things happened after that. Mosgov got called for a travel (a call Walton didn't like) and took and missed an awkward mid-range shot, both Lou Will and Clarkson each shot 1-4, yet probably what gave the night a sour taste the most was Randle getting the opportunity to tie the game with 3 FTs... and subsequently missing the next 2 FT's. Personally, I thought there was still time to find a better 3pt shot (from a better 3pt and FT shooter) instead of Randle pulling up w/ 5 seconds left, but I would've quickly forgotten about that had he made all 3 FT's.
So this loss hurt, basically because the Lakers could have won a game against a team just ahead of them in the Western conference standings. Big picture is that the team competed hard even with a tough schedule and key guys out - which is great. There's a reason bronze medal winners are typically happier than silver medal recipients - they're happy that they got on the podium whereas silver medalists tend to focus on the fact that they just missed out on a gold medal. This loss will sting because the Lakers were right there and just came up a little short.
Side notes:
* Watching Lou Will play tonight made me miss old prime Kobe... back in the day he would've lit Tony Allen up down the stretch
* Clarkson's shot only traveled with him to Chicago on this 4 game road trip. 4-14 (.286) @ NOP, 9-18 (.500) @ CHI, 4-15 (.267) @ TOR, and 4-16 (.250) @ MEM. He only shot 3 FT's this entire road trip too (all @ TOR). Hope he breaks out of this mini slump soon.
* Huertas seems to give the offense a spark (especially by feeding a red hot Lou Will), but I felt like Green got a ton of offensive boards against the Lakers while Huertas was on the court (due to scrambling to help him on D and him not boxing out). Hope to see better from Huertas (especially if Calderon's hobbled and Russell's not back yet) |

New coach, new players. Same old Lakers tradition: giving up career highs to scrubs. |

Clarkson and Randle really cost us the game. Played very, very poorly.
Randle's body language was bad during the entire game.
And those 3 FTs he missed... Damn. |

not bad for being 2 starters and 1 key bench player short. still if I had to P&M; it be about having 2 backup PG's that can't defend and a bench SF that can't contribute even if needed...that's 3 men short and 3 more that can't contribute to defense. Seems like a lot of players give the Lakers have one guy grooming in the D-league. _________________ Lakers need to build a freaking team ! |

I refuse to say we 'competed hard'.
Grizzlies were missing their best players, Marc Gasol was off for 3 and a half quarters, Tony Allen stayed in foul trouble through 3 quarters.
Lou Williams had near 30 first half points and Luol Deng AND Mosgov showed up offensively.
If more than just those 3 players actually brought effort we'd have blown the Grizzlies out and not had to worry about the 4th quarter.
We didn't compete hard, not in the least. We were lazy on defense, didn't box out on rebounds after the 2nd quarter and counted on Lou and Deng to stay hot while we didn't try on the other end.
That's not competing hard, that's coasting. That's precisely what everyone but Lou, Deng and Mozgov did and we paid for it. Not happy with our performance in this one in the least, the vets did precisely what they were supposed to, and none of the young players showed up on either end or effort-wise. |

Nice job, cmonkee.
I'm still a little bummed we lost Nance to a garbage time injury the night before. That came back to bite us in this one. |

Giving career highs to scrubs in not an old Lakers tradition, it's an anomaly. _________________ Not a legend |

I have not complained about the zebras for a while, but we got robbed in this game numerous times. We should not have been in the position for Randle to even have to make those FT's. _________________ R.I.P. Doc Buss |
