In that case, Rox deal is better b/c Nicholson has 2 more years on his deal after this year. |
Should also be noted.. there's nobody on Washington's roster aside from trey Burke (salary wouldn't have matched either) whose deal expires after next season. Everybody else's extends through 2018-2019.
Jason smith has a player option in 2018-2019.
Kelly oubre was pure pipe. |
Burke/Thornton/McLellan for Lou worked. |
I get it, we're Lakers fans. We want the best possible trades for us. Expirings, higher first round picks, etc. But you have to realize there are many variables at play here, and the other team wants to benefit just as much as we do.
More than likely, Washington would not ship out three of their guards (as you proposed above) in order to get one in return. They would literally have only Wall/Beal/Lou/Satoransky as their backcourt + the carcasses of available free agents on the market. They're highly susceptible to being exposed if Satoransky has to play more than the 14 minutes he's averaging due to injury, foul trouble, or fatigue to the others.
With the Nets trade, they now have Wall/Beal/Burke/Bogdonavich/McClellan/Satoransky. Much better position for the Wizards moving forward with two young, cost controlled players in Burke/Bogs.
Based on speculation of them wanting to ship out Nicholson yesterday, and the subsequent follow-up trade today, occam's razor is at play here. More than likely they offered the Lakers Nicholson + 1st rounder. Maybe Thornton and another Laker player was included, but the Wizards primarily wanted to accomplish two things. One get rid of Nicholson's bad contract using their first rounder. Two, bring in scoring help at the guard position without gutting their roster to do so.
Just because something could happen, doesn't mean it was ever a possibility. Ryan West is a sharp guy. If any of us thought about these moves, there's no doubt he did as well. |
The post above speculated that it was not possible, which it was given Thornton's deal and one of their minimum fliers - just exchange McLellan for Daniel House, if they're so hard up for him. Was it offered? Probably not. Did the Lakers counter with a deal asking for a 1st/expirings? How did the Wizards respond? Yes, we'll obviously never know.
And Burke is Huertas level trash on an NBA court. |

This trade pisses me off more and more. Lou Williams is legit and would start on most teams. He is one of our top 3 players and dealing him to a team like Houston is a huge mistake because we might be facing them in the playoffs in another 2-3 years.
Brewer is not even at the same level as Lou.
Draft picks...those have not been great for us and giving up a great player like Lou is going to haunt us like when we lost Trevor Ariza.
If this is the kind of crap we are going to get out of Magic, he better find himself another job cause this one won't be forgiving if he cannot do what Mitch did in the past. _________________ This Laker Organization has not yet hit bottom. It is moving there quickly, and I suspect this year we will see zero talent coming to the Lakers and we will trade away Kuz and BI for old vets in the hopes of giving LeBronze some scapegoats. |

No he wouldn't. Just ask the Raptors/Hawks and their fans what they really think of him. He plays one side of the court and disappears in the playoffs when the refs no longer give him the benefit of the doubt on his "uncanny nature to draw fouls". Every team that has traded him has also been better off post Lou.
Lou was also not part of the long term plan. He was essentially useless here and needed to be dealt for a 1st rounder. And we got that.
Literally just a year ago, Lou was universally hated and we would have been lucky if we could even get a future late 2nd rounder for him. Now that he picked up his play a bit, we rightfully cashed in. _________________ Darvin Scam: https://media.tenor.com/images/3c15249955860a4b16b59e8ae035fb75/tenor.gif |

Sports Illustrated gave the Lakers a A- grade for the Lou trade, it sounds like people think Lakers did a good job.. |

Just reported on SportsCenter that the LouWill trade IS NOT finalized. Both teams are apparently trying to involve a 3rd team and change package.
SportsCenter specifically said that the league offices have not received official notice or an official phone call yet
FYI: This was a report after the end of Lakers practice today.

Source? |
Why do you need a source for something so obvious? Also, a "source" doesn't imply truth anyway. A source could provide truth...or not. |
You're right, we could have been stuck with 2 more years of Nicholson instead be have a pick a few spots better. Seems like a a great idea! |

I know, and Vlade reminded us, "I said I wouldn't trade Cousins. But I never said I wouldn't give him away." |

Yep. |
Agreed and figured that was the case. To a lesser degree the protection also has some impact however minimal. On the other hand Lou is a superior asset to Bogdan. But the Wiz have salary concerns so the package was likely the same.
I mentioned this in another thred but one interesting aspect of the Lou deal is that having a guaranteed 2017 first and Brewer on a one year deal means that if LA keeps its pick both that and Brewer could be used in a predraft deal for George. Obviously Brewer would just be salary ballast, but you can't trade future cap room or an expiring. So the Brewer deal becomes something like what Calderon is this year. The golden ticket in this scenario is non-guaranteed contracts of which LA has Black. But he's played up to his deal so that aspect is less important. Afflalo would be a good get for this reason. _________________ Austin Reaves keeps his game tight, like Kobe Bryant on game night. |

Windhorst was just on SportsCenter at 5:05pm PST and he's confirming NO TRADE YET.
1. both Lakers and the Rockets are leaving the deal open to see if they can possibly involve another team and/or assets
2. the league definitely hasn't been called yet with the official "we've made a trade" call
Windhorst said that sometimes 3rd teams will call up the 2 primary teams and say "can we get in on this?"
Windhorst also said that in the end he thinks it'll end up being just Lakers/Rockets and the assets already involved. _________________ LBJ + AD = More rings

Neither team done working the phones. Could just be agreeing to leave it open to provide more flexibility for rerouting/aggregating Brewer and or more salary matching margin for either team. _________________ Austin Reaves keeps his game tight, like Kobe Bryant on game night. |

Cleveland wants Beverly but would settle for Calderon (according to reports last week), Rockets want Iman Shumpert but don't want to lose Beverly... Just a guess, but it could be whats happening here. |

Any news on who the third team may be?
Think you are right about just being open to expanding the deal. Both teams have stated they have players to move. |

Calderon is a FA after this season, and he's gone anyway.
even if we traded him for a couple of 2nd round picks that'd be a good deal for us
We got 2-#2's to absorb his contract this year, a couple of more #2's to let the Cavs to rent him for 3 months? sign me up _________________ LBJ + AD = More rings
