Rob Pelinka has the inside pipeline with Kobe Bryant, so it’s no surprise that he’s talked to his former client about being involved with the Lakers.
Pelinka was officially introduced as the new Lakers’ GM during the week. Pelinka was the agent to many NBA players — including stars like Kobe and James Harden — prior to taking the GM job. He said on Friday that he has talked with Kobe about helping the Lakers.

There will be a lot of championship rings on the table at that dinner meeting.
Kobe has previously expressed a willingness to help his former team, though current coach Luke Walton declined his offer for now, feeling Kobe’s tough love approach isn’t best for the young team. |

I left the interview a little less confident. I was hoping to hear a great basketball mind. Didn't get that vibe, atleast not yet. _________________ "He's a Zen master, so he can speak to you, and he doesn't need a microphone; you can hear him in your head, 'Ron, don't shoot, don't shoot.' I think with the amount of basketball films, studying players, strategizing with coaches that he has done, Kobe might be a good coach in the NBA (with the correct mindset) |

I'm going to take a wait and see, but I'm a little concern about all the Laker pride talk, and what it means to wear purple and gold, etc. Mitch and Jim got bashed for relying too much of the past, and basketball free agents wanted to hear more basketball talk. But what Pelinka talked about has a lot to do with business and branding, pride, etc. All the stuff that went through one ear and out the other with free agents. LOL! But then again, this isn't a free agent recruiting pitch. So we'll see what this regime will have in store. |

I would personally, initially, avoid involving many ex-Lakers. I think this should be all about forging a new identity for the franchise.
Once you establish what your new identity is, and it is strong, I think it can help to bring in some of the great minds and players of the past.
If I'm starting a new business and I'm trying to establish a new brand, the worse thing I can do is bring in blue chip executives to run my business and build my brand. Build the brand first, then, when you need a steadying force, you can bring in a couple of blue chippers. |

Yes to all of the above but he does look pretty boss tho

I think all the Lakers Exceptionalism talk was just talk to appease the masses. He said a lot of promising things too.
Only thing I'm not thrilled with? It's really looking like Kobe's going to have a role in the organization though, somehow, somewhere. I guess I'm fine with it... depends on the role... _________________ Austin Reaves

They aren't trying to reincarnate lakers past. Have fear if bscott or rambis have significant roles. Kobe is a brilliant guy in the sense that he and magic put the best people around themselves. Guys love Kobe. Only difference now is they don't have to play with him. That's a plus. Kobe the mentor is a great role whether for game or businesses |

I'd be worried about Assistant GM Kurt Rambis if it didn't look like Phil wants to hire him as a head coach in New York after this season

My concern isn't that they wouldn't put the best people around them. My concern is, whether having guys like Magic, Kobe, Luke, etc, help you forge a NEW brand or slow that process.
Ever worked for a company, where people say, well, when I was at such-and-such, this is how we did it?
That's what I'm worried about. Now imagine you have a number of guys who worked at such-and-such. |

I don't expect him to be a great basketball mind int the molds of Jerry West. I expect 3 things from him:
- Great relationship with other GMs, agents, players and the NBA.
- Negotiation skills, including sound knowledge of CBA, contract values and cap management.
- Trust Luke when it comes to "basketball system" and Ryan/Jesse about player's evaluations. _________________ .... |

I'm only concerned about that exceptionalism crap as it pertains to guys who are currently wearing the uniforms. Using that as your main sales pitch is another matter. Ask LMA.
And if he and Magic ARE gonna talk about branding, media, connections, all that, they need a good presentation, obviously. I wouldn't think Mitch as the kind of guy to tell recruits a bunch of "mover and shaker" mumbo jumbo. That seems to me the kind of thing an agent would be well-suited to do. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

A lot of people saying he wouldn't leave his agency to be a yes man to Magic. So far that's what it sounds like he will be, or maybe it's just me getting that vibe. _________________ "He's a Zen master, so he can speak to you, and he doesn't need a microphone; you can hear him in your head, 'Ron, don't shoot, don't shoot.' His disposition and tone in speaking, really isn't much different from Mitch. I'm kind of surprised - I thought we'd get a more charismatic GM; but I guess we don't need that with Magic next to him. |

I'm glad Mitch and Jim are gone. But Kent Bazemore is overrated and now way over paid.
We dodge that bullet but only to get ran over by the Moz/Deng contracts. |
