According to Woj, contract contains provisions for the Sixers to get out of full amount if Embiid suffers "catastrophic" injury. Also contains an incentive for another $30 million for individual awards.

still would make me nervous....as he is far more likely to often be injured and miss a lot of games in comparison to a "catastrophic" injury. I can see this not working out so well.....guess time will tell.

I don't get it either. He would have only been an RFA after this season. Maybe the Sixers were afraid they couldn't get him to agree to these injury provisions next summer if he put up a solid season.
I expect most of that rest of that draft class will be wait and see.

The deadline for former first-round picks to sign rookie-scale extensions is Oct. 16.
The Denver Nuggets reportedly have a deal in place with Gary Harris. The Minnesota Timberwolves and Andrew Wiggins are believed to be close to a long-term agreement.
The Phoenix Suns already inked T.J. Warren to a four-year, incentivized deal worth $50 million.
The following players are also eligible: Marcus Smart (Boston Celtics), Zach LaVine (Chicago Bulls), Clint Capela (Houston Rockets), Julius Randle (Los Angeles Lakers), Jabari Parker (Milwaukee Bucks), Doug McDermott (New York Knicks), Aaron Gordon (Orlando Magic), Elfrid Payton (Orlando), Nik Stauskas (Philadelphia), Noah Vonleh (Portland Trail Blazers), Jusuf Nurkic (Portland), Shabazz Napier (Portland), Kyle Anderson (San Antonio Spurs), Lucas Nogueira (Toronto Raptors), Bruno Caboclo (Toronto), Dante Exum (Utah Jazz) and Rodney Hood (Utah).

I guess our GMs not the only one who can't negotiate $. If that was me, I'll ask Embiid for a straight up discount ala Steph's 'taking the injury risk' first contract
It's a max extension starting at 25% that ups to the 30% max if he is 1st team or MVP.
There are specific injury exclusions for tarsals/metatarsals on either foot, including navicular bone, and for lumbosacral region of back/spine.
2018-19 is fully guaranteed, while the other seasons are subject to a 1650 minute threshold, with the guarantee dropping to 48.6% if he doesn't clear the threshold and is waived. If he hits 1650 in three consecutive seasons or three of four, then his contract fully guarantees.

1650 minutes threshold... what is that? 45-55 games?

I didn't even know they were allowed to put in such specific requirements. That's pretty neat.

Thanks for the explanation, Larry! How does this Embiid contract affect their ability to offer super max deals to Simmons and Fultz, especially if Embiid gets injured and waived?

That wouldn't be difficult to reach for most starting caliber players, but they will be managing his minutes very closely. They were already doing that last year and we know how that worked out. Assuming he could stay healthy for all 82 games, he would only need to average just over 20 minutes per game.
Realistically he won't play all 82, health permitting or not, so he just can't miss any real extended period of time. If he played at the 25 minutes per game he averaged last year, he would need to play in 66 games to reach it.

It doesn't affect what they can offer Simmons and Fultz. Of course the super max is up to the players, not the team. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023.

I think your real question is how much Embiid's contract, with all those exclusions, count against cap.
That would be a factor in signing free agents, but not in re-signing current players. Even if you are over cap, you can offer your current player the max or the super max (if they qualify for it, since that is based on achievements like making all-NBA teams.)

My question was poorly worded. I was curious about how the two player limit on designated player exceptions for rookies works - because of Embiid's deal, does Philly now have to choose between offering a DPE max to only one of Simmons or Fultz? And what is the time period for offering DPEs - can you offer it to two players back-to-back and then offer two new DPEs 2 or 4 or 10 years later?
Also, because of the unique injury provisions in Embiid's contract, does that affect his DPE status so that the Sixers could offer back-to-back DPEs to Simmons and Fultz in 2020/2021 if Embiid gets injured and waived in the next couple years?
what the heck is that statline
18 FTs, 9 FGA, 15 min
The Nets have the worst center rotation in the NBA, and Embiid is going to obliterate small ball lineups. The Nets were guarding him for stretches with Hollis-Jefferson.
I really, really hope Embiid stays healthy, because he seriously looks like Wilt with shooting touch.

He was 14-18FT, so no Hack a Shaq.
HoF caliber **IF** healthy.
Likely something between a Ralph Sampson or Zo. _________________ -----------------------------------------------------
