In summary: Clippers tried to copy the Lakers, then playoff Rondo gave Kawhi a look and he collected DNPs while Reggie Jackson cashed in on the playing time.

Why do we feel the need for these player-coaches? Dudz, Rondo/
We have a bunch of older guys who are more than capable of taking young guys under their wings.
He is a proven clutch performer. I like his grit and heart.
Yup, anything Dudz could have brought Rondo brings substantially better. I'm sure the young guys will all get the majority of the regular season minutes but if anyone is hurt or doesn't play up to expectations you got Rondo ready to bark at them and steal more minutes if necessary. It will also be huge for any games Bron or Westbrook misses since now we will continue to have an elite Playmaker and overall floor general on the floor at all times.
This also will light a bit of a bigger fire under everyone. This teams practices alone will probably be more intense then a lot of the actual games. You can call this roster "old" all you want but this team is absolutely built to win a Championship right now.

That about sums it up.
I don't think Rondo is for everybody.
I remember the hug LBJ gave him in the final game of the championship 2 years ago so I think LBJ appreciates him. Multiple times AD mentioned in interviews how Rondo would push him..like AD will tell Rondo, that is impossible to do..but Rondo would tell him he has to do it! Seems to be a better fit the Lakers culture.
Looks like he's coming back to us. Seven Hall of Famers.
We have 4 Hall of Fame locks -- Lebron, Carmelo, AD, and Westbrook.
Howard is pretty likely.
Rondo is borderline, but the line has been moving down, so he has a decent shot.
Gasol might make based on his international career, though he doesn't have an NBA Hall of Fame career.
On a side note: I think it's pretty sad how the Hall has lowered their standards so dramatically over the past decade. Under pressure, they let in virtually every borderline candidate and so now the borderline is Shawn Marion, Amare Stoudemire, and Lamarcus Aldridge.

The basketball Hall has really become a joke.
Howard is a no-brainer. Marc is probably a HOF as well and also Rondo I think.
Howard is absolutely a hall of famer imo. He's a 3 time DPOY, 5 time rebounding champion, 2 time blocks leader, 7 time all-NBA, 5 time all-defensive. He's a lock.
I don't think Rondo is a hall of famer, but he has a shot. Don't think Marc has much of a shot, his only real claim to it is the DPOY.
With Bron, Westbrook and Rondo, you will have some of the best passing you may ever see. I would give that trio some minutes at times with AD at the 5 and a 2-way three point shooter.
Rondo can’t be relied on to play big minutes but he’s got those intangibles and leadership qualities we lacked so much last year. We want him fresh and to be able to give us 5-6 good minutes a half in the playoffs.

They lowered the standards? Really?
1960 Ed McCauley. One ring. 17 ppg, 7 rpg. Meh.
1961 Andy Philip. A 36% FG sharpshooter who averaged 9 ppg for his career.
1969 Dutch Dehnert. Not only did he play pre-1940s, he had a losing record as a coach.
1970 Bob Davis, an impressive career 37.8% FG But hey, he beat the Lakers in the 1951 playoffs en route to his one ring.
1972 Max Friedman. Played in the 1920s.
1976 Tom Gola, who made an all-star game in 64 for a Knicks team that won 28 games and he averaged an amazing 9 ppg (just below his career average of 11).
1982 All-time Lakers great Slater Martin, who had the good fortune of playing next to Mikan for the Minneapolis Lakers. He aided in the championship runs with his sharpshooting sub-37% career FG%, dropped 9 points and 4 dimes per.
We could continue this exercise with any number of Bill Russell associated Celtics, any number of other pre-history type players, any number of guys who couldn't make a G-legaue squad today. The HOF started off basically celebrating guys who just came first. Eventually we get enshrinement of Mikan, Russell, Baylor--celebrating the guys with legit talent. And yeah, now in the modern era, which is vastly more talented than during both NBA pre-history and probably all the way until the 80s, we have a lot of guys deserving and certainly better than many inducted decades ago.
The guys above would get absolutely smoked by elite high school kids today, never mind seasoned NBA veterans. But that is because the Hall was established to enshrine historical importance (and hell, I guess Max Friedman was important to basketball history in the 1920s). I would never argue a Marion or Aldridge holds any historical importance, but put those guys into the 1950s or 1960s NBA and they're putting up some Elgin/Wilt type numbers and no one questions how good they are.
I'm not sure what the solution is, nor if we even need one. I mean by 2040 the entire league will be composed of gene edited mutants all with a baseline of MJ's skill, Kobe's drive, and Lebron/Shaq bodies. When the guys getting cut from the pre-season roster are better than a Kobe or Durant today, then what? I mean the Hall will always have recency bias--in four decades some kid will be looking at Jordan's career and saying he's overrated compared to the latest, greatest player. At some point the league could be international, could have 100 teams, and more guys to retire into the NBA's Valhalla.
Until and unless the league puts in actual data driven standards, then yeah, at the end of the day it is a nostalgia and popularity contest and no one should think any more deeply about it than that.
